This week I speak to Shan Guisinger again, and this time we are talking specifically about fear in Anorexia. Fear of weight gain. Fear of eating more. How could a fear this great have possibly had an evolutionary advantage? Find out!

I found this really interesting. It has been amazing discovering your content and finding that so much of what you describe fits my experience. The whole migration response theory has been really eye opening. One thing I am struggling to place in the theory with regards to my own experience is purging. For me, I used both exercise and making myself sick to purge food throughout the majority of the years I had an eating disorder. The exercise part really fits well with the migration response theory as you described, but I am wondering about the impulse to throw up food. I can’t seem to think of any reason why this would serve an evolutionary purpose in a famine setting. I would be really interested to listen / read your thoughts on the topic of purging (particularly purging by throwing up). I am still working my way through all your podcasts, so maybe you have some on this topic already. It seems I am not alone in having transitioned from restriction to a horrible and long lasting binge/purge cycle. For me, my experience both mentally and physically was very different stuck in binge/purge faze than it was in restriction.
